IAF Frontier Architecture Festival | Interview with Pioneer Architects

The IAF Frontier Architecture Festival launched a special visit to some representative design firms with the theme of "Pioneer" to listen to the pioneering design viewpoints of the principals of the firms. 2022 In July, RUAN Hao, the founder of LYCS Architecture, was invited by the organizer of Guangzhou Design Week to share his design views.

Q: What was the original reason for the creation of LYCS Architecture?

Q: What are the keywords for LYCS Architecture?

A: "Simplicity, lightness, honesty and pleasure. On top of that, we give ourselves a very clear vision: What we design is not a house, but an interesting way of life. So the projects we do may vary a lot on its overall stylistic level, but in reality, it creates a very clear and consistent relationship between the way of life and the way of working and the city."

Q: How do you understand the "pioneering" nature of architecture?

A: "I think that when you make something that can bring others something to think about, something that can become something that can be quoted and learned from, it is pioneering. If pioneering is only considered at the level of the ego, it is just a biased definition. I think the real meaningful pioneer should be something that can be a breakthrough in the way of using and contributing to the city.

I don't think that pioneering and aesthetics, practicality and uniqueness are in a reciprocal relationship. Although trial and error is a good thing in itself, whether it can eventually become a pioneer or not requires a multidimensional judgment. I think setting a clear design vane and a city benchmark with strong guidance and demonstration can be called a pioneer."
