Micro-innovation - making connections between different things
Any creativity does not come overnight, it must come from a grasp of the user's emotional needs. For architectural design, innovation is more inspired by some limitations of real conditions.
For example, for the Tiantai County Running School, we wanted to design a school that could provide a child with the right to run despite the particularly limited space, so that he could have the space to run as a child, which is one of his emotional needs. We wanted to address this emotional need, not only to satisfy it, but also to enhance it in a new way.
Innovation is not 100% invention or creation, but more of a "micro-innovation", where we create connections between things that don't seem to be related. In the case of the school, it's creating a relationship between the track and the roof of the school; in the case of the table, it's creating a connection between the space of the cat and the space of the table. So it's establishing this connection between things that don't seem to have a relationship, to be able to do a kind of innovation, to generate some new ideas in this way.
The art of architecture rational or emotional ?
The reason why architecture is the first of the seven arts is that it is a carrier for many other arts. Like painting or sculpture, all of them can be attached in the architecture. In fact, architects not only have to put emotional factors into their designs, but also have to consider the constraints of site, orientation, and use of function, etc. Architecture is not a purely free art.
Architecture should ultimately be able to match its functional, practical and emotional needs, because people have to live in it and use it, and it can't simply be about how much rationality and sensibility it has in it.
The problem of current urban living environment: unhappiness
The biggest problem with architecture now is that people are unhappy. Everyone is living a two-point life, because we now have limited resources, everyone is competing to have the resources, and the place where people live in the city is not happy enough because of such a place or environment. And happiness is the most basic emotional needs of people. Therefore, what designers want to improve is to be able to make the living environment and the city become less boring than it is now. For example, when walking through a certain road, you can find a certain building some fine, when entering a space you can find this space can have a dialogue with human emotions, this is a very delicate thing, is the future of the living environment is a very important development direction.
Previously, the planning and design of our living environment was mostly top-down, but now, in this age of the Internet, it is more of a bottom-up, invisible approach that allows a living environment to emerge from the most basic unit of use, the user.
Become an urban innovator through design
We want to do interesting things, and interesting things in our context actually means design things, things that can be seen and touched. We go from a very small scale, a table, a piece of furniture, to a building, and we do it all in here. When the human emotion is the starting point, all design is connected. In the future, what I hope most is to become a very powerful innovator in the theme of urban renewal in China through design.
Just like the design we did for the rooftop elementary school.
We are looking less at how a school should be designed and more at a model, such as how this elementary school can make the most efficient use of its land and space in a high-density urban environment to form the building we want. This model can
We hope that this model can be promoted, because it is not an isolated case, it is a high-density problem in many old cities in China, so I am more concerned about this matter.
