The project is located at the northeast corner of the intersection of Fengqing Road and Sandun Road in the north of Hangzhou. With the acceleration of urbanization, the original farmland and daily life are being replaced. The placement of public rental housing for university talents in an area undergoing drastic changes has become the starting point for many issues. This particular public rental housing project for university teachers is unique. It requires a specific definition of space and land for their daily lives rather than just adding landscaping outside the building.
The design of this project explores a methodology that treats the tandem assemblage as a unit, pushing and pulling it in a modal way to form a "jagged" prototype. Then replicates, deforms and superimposes the prototype to fit the site, and creates a four-story high public space between the units that result from the superimposition; and finally rotates the finally, the units are rotated and the site is enclosed, forming a form that rises from 24 meters to 70 meters unit by unit, so that it is "anchored" in the site. The hole in the northwest corner of the building is used as the main pedestrian entrance. The southeast corner of the site is lifted to serve as a public building for the community, forming a semi-enclosed "field" with the residential volume, and together with the public space in the air between the residential units, providing a space for the university teachers to have a sense of place.
The four-story high public space between the units is more than a simple connecting passage. It is more like an elevated "urban garden." The space is filled with plants and flowers. Some floors have seating and resting areas. This space has become a gathering place for young university teachers to exchange ideas and share their lives, providing a space for them to have a sense of place.
