The Grand Canal Hanggang Sports and Culture Hotel is on the southwestern side of the Grand Canal Hanggang Industrial Site Comprehensive Protection Project. It is surrounded by tributaries of the Beijing-Hangzhou Canal, creating a serene environment. Its functions include a restaurant, a water bus station, a rowing club and a hotel. The design concept "Nature Revival" incorporates the natural elements of trees and water from the nearby canal and heritage park. These elements are translated into a unique interior space using modern design techniques, seamlessly blending water sports and industrial heritage. The design uses flowing lines to outline the natural form and meaning, creating Hangzhou's latest gathering place for water sports.
Since the post-industrial era, from the transformation of the Ruhr industrial area in Germany into a tourist-rich urban park to the successful hosting of the 2022 Winter Olympics at the Shougang factory in Shijingshan, Beijing, the unique charm bursting from the combination of rugged and magnificent industrial facilities and the beautiful scenery of natural ecology is becoming increasingly popular. The development of early industrial civilization relied on a privileged natural environment. Still, with the innovation of production technology, industrial relics are gradually occupied by nature and abandoned industrial buildings are integrated with the natural environment. We use natural elements to project the modern structural system abstractly. The "woods" become a natural metaphor for the frame structure, and the "shade" interconnects in the space, defining gray space and a sense of security.
The breeze ripples across the water surface. We extracted the natural element, ripples, and translated it into visualized lines and a sense of three-dimensional space with modern design techniques. When the fresh air circulates in the room, it will naturally cause the soft decorative material on the top to fluctuate, thus creating a sense of rippling atmosphere.
